Really, the changes to animals were done to make slaves useful. When the event triggers, hostile insects have a chance to spawn on a tile that is under a mountain. This event only happens with the Cassandra Classic or Randy Random storytellers (or is exceedingly rare on Phoebe Chillax). Infestations can also occur upon entering rooms in an ancient complex you will get no specific warning for this quest. They can happen randomly or can be caused by a quest quests will warn you if this is an outcome. And the fact that 1.3 is supposed to make animals more 'realistic' doesn't cut it, since the patch introduces magical tree creatures. To begin, let us look at Rimworld’s Megascarab Infestation event. Infestations are an event and a serious threat in which a number of hives are spawned, alongside insectoid defenders. Decided to mock up a 3d model of a Megascarab from Rimworld to help learn Blender and figured Id throw the files out. So, cutting out a lot of the hauling and combat capabilities of animals doesn't make sense to me. I think that 3500 years in the future, animals would probably be either selectively bred or genetically engineered to be smart enough to do a lot of basic things, especially those specifically brought to Rimworlds as farm animals, beasts of burden, and so on. They are ground beetles of metallic color that posses elytra, a protective shell resistant to blunt damage by 18 and sharp damage by 72. I'm kind of ambivalent to the changes, personally. Megascarabs are a type of Insectoid found in regular and extreme deserts, infestations or inside ancient shrines, including inside the caskets. There was a discussion a few days ago that covered something similar, namely animals that no longer nuzzle. I know it is a fictional world, but it obviously tries to orientate itself by real life. While I like the more realistic touch in 1.3, I think some animals feel "off", especially pigs and the hauling big cats and bears. One thing I noticed: No animal that needs to be in a pen is trainable in any way other than tameness.
